Compost "Green Waste"
Description
Compost "Green Waste" is a great choice for ornamental planting beds, tree and shrub areas, soil building, and general landscape fill because it adds organic matter, improves soil structure, and helps the soil hold moisture, all at a budget-friendly price. This is a dark brown, recycled compost made from composted green waste, with a coarse, earthy texture that blends fine, soil-like material with small bark and wood pieces. Whether used to enrich native soil, refresh landscape beds, or add organic matter across a larger project, Compost "Green Waste" is a practical, economical way to build healthier soil. Please note that this material is sourced from a landfill and may occasionally contain foreign material (see "Please read before ordering" below).

Installation Depth Guide — Cubic Yard Coverage for Compost "Green Waste"
| Depth | Coverage per Cubic Yard | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 1″ | ~324 sq ft | Too shallow |
| 1.5″ | ~216 sq ft | Not recommended |
| 2″ | ~162 sq ft | Minimum depth |
| 3″ | ~108 sq ft | Recommended |
| 4″ | ~81 sq ft | Ideal depth |
| 5″ | ~65 sq ft | Usually unnecessary |
| 6″ | ~54 sq ft | Excessive |
Note: A typical installation depth for planting beds and landscape areas is 2–4 inches, ideally worked into the top 4–6 inches of existing soil rather than left as a thick layer on its own. Because this compost is coarser than a screened garden compost, it is better suited to beds, tree and shrub areas, and soil building than to fine seedbeds or lawn top-dressing. Keep compost pulled back slightly from plant stems and trunks, and water after spreading to help it settle. Because this material is sourced from a landfill, it may occasionally contain foreign material, including glass, plastic, or other debris. We recommend wearing gloves when handling it and inspecting it as you spread it. When in doubt, test a small section first.
Product details, what you should know
- Please read before ordering: This material comes from a landfill and, as a recycled product, can contain foreign material at times, including pieces of glass, plastic, metal, or other debris that were not removed during processing. We have had past instances of glass shards in this compost. It is not screened to the standard of a garden-grade compost, so we do not recommend it for vegetable gardens or edible plantings, or for play areas and other places where children, pets, or bare feet are present. Wear gloves when handling and spreading it, and check it as you work.
- Sizing: A coarse, mixed texture made up of fine, soil-like compost along with small bark pieces, wood chunks, and twigs, and the occasional small stone. Natural variation in particle size and moisture between loads is normal.
- Composition: Composted green waste, a recycled blend of yard trimmings, wood, and plant material broken down into a dark, soil-like material. A recycled product rather than a sterile or manufactured blend.
- Appearance: Dark brown in color, with a coarse, earthy look and visible bark and wood pieces mixed throughout. Color may vary between loads and appears darker when moist.
- Usage notes: Best used to amend existing soil and build up landscape beds. Spread a layer over the surface and work it into the top several inches for the best results. It can also be used as a top-dressing around established trees and shrubs. Water after spreading to help it settle.
- History: Material has remained generally consistent in color and texture over time. Because it is a recycled product, the exact makeup of each load varies, and minor variation between loads is normal.
- Also known as: Commonly referred to as green waste compost, recycled compost, or yard waste compost.
Compost "Green Waste" is our budget-friendly compost option, a good fit for customers who want to add organic matter to ornamental beds, tree and shrub areas, or larger projects without paying for a screened garden-grade product. Because it is a recycled, landfill-sourced material, it can contain foreign material such as glass or other debris, so we recommend it for ornamental and general landscape use rather than food gardens or play areas, and suggest gloves when you handle it. Stop by the yard to see the compost in person and pick up a free sample before you order, and ask our team if you are not sure which of our composts fits your project.
